Supreme Court action puts pressure on Fla. AG over gay marriage appeals

Monday, October 6, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi isn’t saying what she will do in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision to turn away appeals from five states seeking to prohibit gay and lesbian union.

Attorney General Pam Bondi (R-Fla.)

Florida’s existing ban on gay marriage isn’t directly affected by the Monday decision. But Bondi has said previously she wanted the high court to resolve the outstanding legal questions surrounding the ban.

A spokesman for Bondi said Monday her office is “reviewing the impact” of the decision.

Several Florida circuit judges and a U.S. judge in Tallahassee have already declared the state’s ban unconstitutional. Bondi and Gov. Rick Scott have appealed those rulings. The judges have agreed to stay their rulings pending those appeals.

Groups opposed to ban are calling on Bondi to end the appeals.
